just wondering....
« on: December 03, 2008, 06:38:29 PM »
hey guys,

After getting a little frustrated with on line racing at the beginning of my forza career ((1)due to me not being that fast and (2)the general well documented bad manners in many random rooms) i'm finally thinking about doing some more online racing.

I figure muscle inc./forza tuning is the place to at least get the rid of the (2) problem. All this different specs resulted in me getting a little lost. So my main questions are: What specs are you guys mostly running? and What would be a nice "beginners" class for me to start with?

The Sockmonkeys are a great beginner class. B Class-FWD-under 300 HP.

The muscle classes are a little more hairy, but they aren't uncontrollable. The tunes here help a bunch. (except mine)

I'm still running the LMMS Spec. (Usually) A850-American RWD-slicks. But I do slip in foreign RWD cars in the challenges.

Fndr is building a LW A850 class series that is RWD only. Enging placement is open though. These are grippy little cars. Fun and starting to rip up my leaderboard.

Any others I've missed.

I have some C-class cars in my garage under the Tiny Terror Classic spec.  It's basically the small RWD sportscars with slicks, full WR, and under 200 hp.  They're sort of a RWD version of the sockmonkeys, modeled after SCCA production (full prep and slicks)racing.

The A spec that Drift mentioned is a new series we're about to start, the GT400 cup.  Bimmer has had at least as much to do with its development as I have, and I blatantly stole the spec from one of Hop's online rooms.  The cup will be endurance racing, A850, 300-400 hp.  I'm running a Camaro.  Bimmer's running Heidi.  Open's got an RX8 that's coming together nicely.  I'll be putting a signup page up for that series soon.

I run the GT400 spec in open rooms sometimes.  It tends to weed out the people who only have missiles and LB cars, who are often the worst of the dirty drivers in my experience.  I've also been known to do showroom stock racing (forcing stock upgrades/tuning) and some really wierd room settings. to try to force different cars.  I also do this if only some of the people have cars for some classes.  Forcing a beginner to drive a stock car just to be at the top of the class against a room full of pros in meticulously built and custom-tuned cars is a recipe for disaster, so I do a lot of showroom if I have beginners, too.  Send me a FR, and next time I'm on, I'll shoot you an invite.

Note:  You might also want to build out a Clio Cup car.  They're good trainer cars, and I suspect that we'll continue running them after the cup is over.  I'll also send you a spec miata, which we've run a few times.  I still want to do a series or a few challenges for that car eventually.

Turns out I have a focus ST, mugen integra, Cobalt SS, both leons, vis acura-R, sentraSE-R-V all built to spec :)

I read (part of) the original sockmonkey thread and noticed it started out with focus/srt4/cobalt, later on people start discussing other cars. Just to be sure: What cars are allowed ?

Sockmonkey's are anything Front Wheel Drive and between 200 and 300 hp... Any car that meets those specs is allowed although the Mugen's are generally frowned upon because of the Leaderboard car status...

If you're interested I've posted up builds / tunes for a few of my 'Sockmonkeys' which I run in open B-class rooms here...

I'd say that for just regular old online racin', just have a regular old A classer and a B classer ready, and you should be good for most of the races  :)

But for when we narrow is down, the other posts are also helpful  :)
It is highly likely that the above post was produced with a drippy jowl.

There are a few ready-made cars posted up in people's garages.  You might particularly want to try my D-class Miata and B-class 2000GT (Though the latter is only good on flowing tracks, really).  I'd also build out the leaderboard cars, partly because in some rooms you have to fight fire with fire, and partly because seeing the difference between them and the "normal" cars will help you figure out good track/car combinations.
