I finally got around to running this.  I managed a 133.944 in the CLK, and a 134.598 in the C32.

Both times have room to improve - sugar high + tired = "odd" driving :D

(Drift edit) Lemme see that time slip Bimmer. Are you sure you ran a 2:13?  Or a 1:53

Friday afternoon. A hard week equals frustrations on both sides

Drift: (Coming out of the hauler) What is that ruckus going on? Sounds like two roosters fighting over the hen house.

Krista: Help us out here. The two suits are about to get into a scrap.

Suit 1: Ya, you know we carried you und now your mad that you're going to fold, ya.

Suit 2: I'm going to show you how to fold your head up your.....

Drift: Hold on. We're all adults here. Quit acting like its recess in the schoolyard. Get back to your respective team areas and keep the fight on the track.

Suit 2: That's a great idea. Come on Dr. Z. Lets see if you designed balls into your car. Best you got vs. best we got, A Class right now.

Suit 1: Oh, do you want the refined McLaren SLR to wipe your V10 abomination off this track. Sounds good to me. But let's raise the stakes. Say a million dollar bet?

Suit 2: Put on your firesuit and shut the mouth. Let the car do the talking.
(while walking back to the hauler)
He better be glad that you guys stopped me. I might have killed that geek.

Drift: Yeah, it looked it you were going to slapfight him to death. Come on Chuck Lidell. Let's get the new Viper up and running in A Class. I know its not going to take slicks. But we got more wiggle room than him. I'm betting on super wide DOT tires and alot of downforce.

Suit 2: Sounds like the new ACR hardcore package. He's got no chance. It's a track beast.

Drift: Let's hope so for your sake. Or you might get divorced for losing a mill to Dr. Z.

So there's the final straw. A little side bet. A brand new Viper SRT-10 top of A Class Vs. a maxxed out A Class McLaren SLR. Let the betting commence.

The side bet
No restriction except A Class limit
new Viper SRT-10
Mercedes McLaren SLR

Poll opened up to see how long you want to run this one.

http://forza-tuning.net/index.php/topic,957.new.html

Vote now. The current deadline is Sun night.

And please, if you are posting a side bet time, please note it as such. SB is fine beside it.
Genius here had to get TWO Vipers in the mix :-[

Saturday morning. Deadline is looming. Time to get something done

Drift: I got so many cars to get out there, I'm going to need another driver. I guess it's time to get focused and make the most of the laps left.

Herb: The laps yesterday on the Viper SRT-10 were pretty decent. I mean its not going to catch Switch here. But they aren't too far off some of the other times posted so far. Best lap so far is

side bet
Viper SRT-10
113.513

Now we really need to get some quality laps out of the challenge spec Viper. Get out there and so them how we do it.

Drift: (in car) I really didn't like it the first time I run it out. It felt unstable. Heck, I beat the first time with the side bet Viper.

Krista: Just drive. You're not hosting Top Gear now.

Drift: The full DF is just what it needed, and a lighter use of the controls in certain portions of the track. Its almost catching the CLK. Just a bit more.

Krista: Actually you have beat it already. Right now its standing at a best time of

Viper GTS-ACR
112.473

Drift: Great, I can feel the tires starting to give up a little. Best not push it too far. I don't to fly a wreck back.

(now out of the car)
Best runs yet. I don't know if I can get the Charger there. It does feel good. I just don't know if I can hit every corner like I did wth the Viper. Its going to be close. But that will have to wait until tomorrow.

Krista: We might have more time. There have been some rublings that we might have the track for another week. But its going to depend on M-B coming up with the cash to do it. Our sponsors have hit their limit. And, well, to be honest, Why wouldn't you want to leave when your winning?

Drift: I can stand some more pasta. I was digging the alfredo last night. There are some cars that I would like to spend more time with and finish it off, but then some have hit the wall also.

Herb: It looks lilke Dr.Z is about to lose it. He's trying to get one of his DTM drivers down here to get closer to the Viper. I smell desperation. I think he can feel the bet slipping away. He's losing on both ends. A place that they aren't used to being.

Drift: What's the best he's done so far?

Herb: The best for the McLaren SLR is only a

side bet
Mercedes McLaren SLR
114.473

Krista: Oof. Almost a second off with the test driver. I don't think the pro can get that back.

Herb: Yeah, he's feeling the money slipping away.

Drift: I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's almost a bargain to him with the bad exchange rate now. I would hate to see the converted bill for this trip. But then he might have just paid for it with his slow SLR. hee hee.

Viper GTS-ACR v11-2-08
reference time 112.954 Mugello
A Class A850
Avon Slicks
upgrade to rim size + centerline wheels
full platform / no WR
full aero
heavy SOB

tuning:
(all unspecified settings DEFAULT)
final drive ratio     3.55
camber 0.9 front / 0.7 rear
tire pressure 28 front / 29 rear
aero MAX F & R

notes:
->tire temps were very even across the tires after 10 laps on mugello, but the previous tuning version's tire pressure settings of 29 front / 29 rear were resulting in front tires running too hot and 1 psi higher than the rear. It seems odd to me somehow to be reducing pressures on the fronts versus the rears, but we'll see.
->3.55 final drive ratio feels just about perfect and improved maximum observed top speed values on Mugello in A Class to 152mph+ w/stock power, versus previous FD of 3.30, avg top speed 147-148mph.
->next planned settings: tire pressure 27F/28R, 3.50 final drive

Many thanks to all who gave me encouragement and advice on this one.  I got in a little time yesterday, and took the Maserati GS for a spin.  The build was in spec for this challenge already, and I had an old tune on it that's probably just a F'dog.

I don't know why, but this car just seemed to agree with me.  I tried to apply all the advice I received on here (except I hadn't yet seen Hop's suggestion for backwards mapping the track; I'll have to play around with that), as I ran a few laps without being overly concerned with my times; concentrating on my lines, throttle control and apexing instead.

After about a dozen laps, I hit 117.041 with more to be had.  That's still way off you guys, but that's full second and a half below what I was running with the Xfire.  I chalk it up to getting more familiar with the track, plus focusing more and actually not stressing about it.  (This is supposed to be fun, right?)   ;D

Anyhow, I'm thinking about going back to the Xfire for a while just to see if I'm really driving better, or if it's just the Maserati.   ;)  But for now:

   Maserati GS: 117.041

Viper Notes v11-3-08
I adjusted the tire pressures 1 psi lower F&R than previous to 27F/28R, and bumped FD from 3.55 to 3.50. After 12 laps I hadn't beaten my time of 112.9xx, but I could've been getting tired/frustrated at that point.

The car feels good, but left me less confident in the tire pressures. The 27 front pressure did just about nothing for the ~200 degree avg front tire temps. I also noticed that the 1 unit difference in operating pressures front to rear vanished when I brought them both down to 28 or lower. The telemetry seems to indicate that the weight of the front mounted v10 is driving temperatures far more than tire pressures alone. The next trial will be to determine the effect, if any, of equal pressures F&R @ 28 units each.

The 3.50 FD in contrast seemed of benefit, and could even go to 3.45 and possibly improve available power in mid corner by giving me a few more RPMs to play with before the shift point, but I must note that someone shifting manually would probably reap no measurable benefit
