RL Project - 1972 International Harvester Scout II
« on: July 11, 2008, 05:35:17 PM »

Watch this space for research, theory and spreadsheets related to my RL Project, a rally-x capable International Scout. It's the kind of thing you have to drive when you're a lot badder than just "nation-wide"... ;D

NOTE! The "Little Devil" belongs to Tom Mandera, a heckuva guy who races in the south-west. My own rig will draw inspiration, but will be MUCH closer to stock components in racing trim. Nothing radical, just a few thousand pounds of all american farm equipment!

Some Inspiration:

PS: To the old timers, and I think you know who you are, I just wanted to say something really important, and from the bottom of my heart. I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable, and I don't often say something like this, but at times like these, some things just have to get out in the open. Well, here goes:

Team Mugen makes me want to vomit. ;D

I've got to give this one a warning for the lyrics, and that means I'll get rid of this link the first time somebody mentions it. The reason it got my attention is this:

I had no idea that this is what the rednecks were listening to! The lyrics are actually kinda hilarious, but whatever you do...

KEEP IT ON MUTE/HEADPHONES FOR THE KIDDIES/CO-WORKERS!

How can they go wrong when the first verse threatens the listener with 'battle axes'? ;)

The scope of the project at this point is limited to 2 critical decisions:

1) Choice of tires - tires will be dedicated to rally cross. Expected terrain is red Georgia clay mixed with good old dirt, mud and gravel. Separate tires will be obtained for street use unless there's a truly awesome dual purpose option that I've missed somehow. May even choose bias-ply for stiffer sidewalls.
Recommended tire diameter is 30" or less. Current front-runner is TSL bias ply 29x10.5. For reference, wheels are 15x8.5 all the way around, wheelbase is 100" and about an inch or two wider than a CJ7, or 10" narrower than a K5! lol

2) Suspension - We're taking a step back in history with this one. The scout has solid axles at the front and rear with leaf springs all the way around and no stock sway bar (can be purchased aftermarket from Addco). It reminds me of a time when race cars such as Allard and Stutz were 'Racing on Sunday to sell on Monday'. Suspension cannot be effectively optimized until tire choice is defined.

and now some more of the 'Little Devil' ;D

This looks to be an interesting hobby - I do hope you have invested in a good kidney belt.

I had a 1960 IH half ton once - the Parts Mfg list that was in the glove box was of major interest, and a hoot.  They obviously were building the things from a parts list that was altered regularly depending on best price and availability.

From a racing stand point, that could be good.  It means the cars are designed to be readily adaptable to anything that comes from a third party vendor.

In response to your PM, I know little about this type of racing but would be happy to consult in areas where I have dabbled.

My first thought (other than the kidney belt) is that having your own welding setup (both gas and arc) will be a must for keeping the little beasty on the track...

Learned to weld in 97 or 98, then had to stop for medical reasons. I decided to learn to draft instead, partly because drafting meant I could work in the A/C, and partly because getting little bits of molten metal stuck in your boot kinda sucks...

Anyway, anyone in the southeast got some aftermarket gages that don't suck? IH instrumentation is generally ... bad, so even decent equipment would be an improvement. I can pay in $$ if it's a screamin deal! ;D

Looking for:
Water Temp
Oil Pressure/Temp
Tachometer
Volts/Amps

Optional
A/F ratio
Tach with shift light ;)

Fit? Anybody further away who would ship?

What is the engine?

a 350 cubic inch (5.7L) Chevrolet small-block v8 with fluids and accessories weighs about 400 lbs.

a 304 cubic inch (5.0L) International SV series v8 WITHOUT FLUIDS OR ACCESSORIES weighs about 675lbs!!!
:o

It's a deep skirt, high-nickel casting block with forged connecting rods and a forged crankshaft. The over-head valves are controlled by push-rods and lifters bumped by a single cam-shaft which is in turn driven by a helical cut gear on the nose of the crank-shaft that mates to a helical cut gear on the nose of the cam-shaft.

So, you asked, "What is the engine?"

My answer: "Unstoppable" ;)
