Captain Spiny's SS
« on: September 13, 2007, 04:26:45 PM »
Having run Suzuka and Sebring more times than I care to think about, I saw this and realised that the SS is the nearest thing I have to a project car. With your collective indulgence I thought I might try and keep track of how it develops over the challenges. Before I start though, I'd just like to say thanks to everyone who gave advice over the weeks gone as without your help and advice I wouldn't have ended up with the car I have today (68.599 at Sebring, 82.086 at Suzuka).

So, here's the set-up for the challenge just gone:

The Stats:
Power: 424 bhp
Torque: 469 bhp
Weight: 3030 lbs

The Build:
Power: Race Intake and Engine Block, Sport Exhaust, Street Fuel System
Handling: All Race except Sport Weight Reduction, no aero
Wheels: Center Line rims with BF Goodrich DOT's, size 215/R14's

The Tune: (F/R unless stated otherwise)
Tyres: 28/28
Gears: FD - 3.30, 1-6 - 2.82, 1.98, 1.45, 1.14, 0.92, 0.75
Camber: -1.0/-0.9
Toe: 0/-0.2
Caster: 5.3
ARB: 16.29/13.18
Springs: 585.9/334.6
Ride Height: 6.0/6.0
Rebound: 9.6/8.3
Bump: 8.7/5.9
Braking: 53% Front, 106% Pressure
Diffs: 32% Accel, 24% Decel

Generally I start of a tune using Feuerdog's calculator which gives me a pretty good set-up, although I often find I want to dial out some understeer. This was the case with the SS, so first of all I reduced the caster from 5.5 to 5.3 degree. The ride height was still set pretty low from the ALS Speedway run in the same car (slightly remodelled paintjob now though as I'm sure you'll see - Dirt, let me know if the pic above needs to be in the picture board) so I lifted it to cope with the kerb I cut at the first hairpin at Sebring. Reducing the diff setting was to try to help prevent me lighting up the rears out of corners. I've got to admit I can't remember if I played around with the spring settings but I fine tuned the handling by softening the fron ARB to try and reduce understeer further. I try to stay away from dampers as much as possible because they haven't clicked fully yet in my head (I haven't got a very big brain and it's filling up with muscle car stuff instead of work stuff  :D)

As for how it drives, possibly the best way to describe it is to describe a run around Suzuka in it (sorry if this should be in the track thread). Generally you should reach the high 140's mph down the start/finish straight before entering 130-R at about 125 mph. A light touch on the throttle will allow you to 4-wheel drift around it and get a pretty good run down to the Turns 2 and 3. Dropping down the gears, Turn 2 is taken in 1st, a quick grab of 2nd and snatch of acceleration then off the throttle and into Turn 3. Being in 2nd you should now be able to straight-line accelerate out in 2nd (it doesn't quite break traction) before another 4 wheel drift through Degner 1 and down to 3rd for Degner 2. The car will then get towards the red line in 4th before the hairpin which it takes in 2nd. Again you need to straightline accelerate out of the hairpin (if you have any steering on you will need to featehr the throttle) but it will accept full throttle out of the corner in a straight line. The car will go flat through the fast right reaching 5th gear before braking down to 3rd for Spoon. You can use a lot of throttle (say 80-90%) between the 2 parts but must back down to about 68-70 mph for the second part. Then it's back on the throttle in 3rd and you should reach about 100 mph before the end of the outside kerb, and about 125 mph over the start/finish line.

Well, I hope that hasn't bored you all senseless and has given you all some idea of the sort of car I'm running.

I wonder why FDog sets his front bump so high?

I know you didnt' ask for any setup tips or anything..and who knows if anything I say will help you at all...but here's what I noticed right off:

As Hoplee said...the bumps are high.  Generally speaking (what I use and what I've heard other people use) is a bump value equal to half of your rebound value.  May be worth a shot.

Also...and keep in mind I have not driven this car...your rear toe seems to be in the opposite direction as I like mine to be on these Muscle cars.  Negative rear toe seems to keep my rear end more in line.  Also may be worth a shot.

Last thing is your brake setup.  53% to the front...106% pressure...those both seem within reason when they are separate...but together seems like you may be locking your fronts up too quickly, and taking away some of the grip from the tires.

One last quick note...and it may just be in the way you describe it...but Turn 1 @ Suzuka West, you're saying "4 wheel drift"...does that mean tire squeal / smoke ?  If so...you're probably losing a few tenths there by doing that.

Take my comments as you wish..I have 0 experience with your tune..I'll delete these comments if you want me to..just trying to help a buddy out ! ;D

Thanks for the advice Serial and Hop - I have a feeling we may be seeing quite a few of the suggestions mentioned appearing in the next challenge. At the very least I'll give them a go - if they don't work out I haven't lost anything and if they do that's another piece fitting in the jigsaw of knowledge  :).

Regarding the brakes, I have to admit that I haven't noticed too much in the way of front end lock-up under braking, but that is probably a combination of being quite gentle (possibly too gentle?) on the brakes, using ABS and braking in a straight line. Again, it's a change I'll have to have a play with at some stage.

Finally, I suspect the description of "4 wheel drifts" through Turn was a little over dramatic. It's certainly not a case of gpong through in a cloud of smoke with tyres squealing, more a feeling that once I have the front end in that the back is pushing me around a bit while the front end gently drifts to the outside. Of course, when I get it wrong then it's usually a case of disappearing in a big cloud of smoke  :o (there's a pic of that at Sebring where I got the hairpin wrong, but it doesn't translate very well to the digi camera.

And Serial, please don't take down your post. Although I feel my tuning know-how has come on leaps and bounds in the last few weeks (thanks mostly to you guys) I am in no way arrogant enough to feel that I have nothing left to learn. I suspect this info is going to be useful to me, and if it helps someone else as well then even better. ;D

EDIT:
Well, I took the car out for a quick try with the mods suggested (well, I haven't played with the brakes yet but just ook things one step at a time) and discovered two things:

1) I'm an idiot. Somehow I lost the minus sign for the rear toe, so I was running negative toe at the back after all. Good spot by Serial to pick it up though.
2) Hop and Serial really are right about those bump settings. I made the changes to the bump settings (now 4.8 F/4.2 R) and the car felt better straight away.

I only ran 7 laps of Sebring in Test Drive (and the first one is from a standing start so you don't get a good time in that anyway) and managed to knock 3/10ths of a second off my best. So it seems I can now hustle this thing around Sebring Club in 68.251 seconds. Those last few tenths are definitely down to Hop & Serial, now if I can find another 0.337s at Suzuka with the new set-up I would have an aggregate under 150s. Too late, but I was already struggling for oxygen in the rarified air that high up on the scoreboard :).

As I said, the SS has some potential. Can't wait to see if it's as good on the Snakes...

Excellent times my friend.
Now I'm looking up. So no more guesstimates on what your times "should" be. Go for the top.

I ran the SS in the QR, long time ago. I felt it had real potential. Potential no more, you just proved its a player.

Thanks Drift, but I have a feeling that this week was a bit of a "perfect storm" in that the car was suited to the track, I hit on a good tune (probably more by luck than judgement) and a quiet spell in the old social life meant I had a bit mroe time to run it and get used to the tracks. If I can get near the top again next time I'll be well happy but I don't think that will happen.

It does seem that every week someone leaps out of the pack and gets closer to the front guys than usual. You've done it, Hek's done it, this time it was mine & Moo's turn. Wonder who it'll be next month?
