I found an interesting (and very long) history of the M3 here (it seems to be from BMW itself):
E30 M3
E36 M3
E46 M3
It is highly likely that the above post was produced with a drippy jowl.

You might be interested in this '95 E36 LW that my instructor had at Road America in 2006. One of 85 brought into the US. Riding with him around the track was a serious thrill, and very good neck exercise.
