OK, I just re-read through this, and now I'm all happy about the Hyundai.  Yeah, you read that right.  I had an elantra back when I first got out of school.  The thing was fun.  It was no sportscar, but it was damn near bulletproof, and fun enough to drive.  I like my current car better, and suspect that my next car will have more hp than this one, but Hyundai makes (IMO at least) good, reliable stuff that gets the job done.

The kick of the Hyundai is that them, Mitsu, and ChryCo have a shared engine program. I believe that the 2.4L four and the 3.8L V-6 are the fruits of that endeavor. So with some proprietary changes (like turbo tune, or MIVEC), the basis of the Caliber (and SRT-4), base Lancer, and the upcoming four cylinder version should be the same.

I got some new stuff but I forgot it.

Ohhh Daaamn I remember now.

This is some hot stuff.
Pratt-Miller Engineering, The guys responsible for the C5R and C6R are going to build a limited edition "street legal" C6R. What?
This includes the monsterous 8.2L 600HP-600ft/lb dry sump race engine. Basically, the only thing you don't get are the race slicks and Ron Fellows.

Speaking of Ron Fellows, GM is building a limited edition Z06 for him. Its very similar to the C4 Grand Sport paint, only it is white with no rally stripes. The little red slashes over the front wheel arches on both sides. Performance stays the same. Not that there is much room to gain from the LS7.

Also on the Vette front comes some tuner news. The same company that ruined  ;) a perfectly good Ford GT by cutting the top off has done the same thing to a new Z06. The car has been significantly reenforced under the body to take the place of the roof structure. Weight has gone up but the So Cal cool factor is huge. The same car was also outfitted with a Vortech S/C puffing a paltry 2 psi of boost in the LS7 to up it to over 600HP.

And Ligenfelter Performance is still out there and the Z06 will never be the same. The people that gave us the twin turbo that we love/hate have put that same magic into this gen Z06. HP is over 800 with a small 5 psi of boost. Good enough to rip out the clutch and pop a head gasket in a 0-200-0 test that would have placed it second behind a twin turbo Ford GT. The turbos are good to over 1100 HP. So overboosting would be a given with the right pistons. Seeing under the hood, you gain a great respect for the team at Ligenfelter. There is simply no room to put the turbos and yet they are there. From firewall to radiator, fender to fender, all you see is wrapped piping and engine.

Ford has released version two of the Bullitt Mustang. Slight power increase (15 HP) and handling package differ from base GT's. Also missing is the front grill. Its is unadorned with a horse or oval. Much like the movie car. I hope you like dark green, because that's the main color that it will be available in.
It is available now....because I saw it at a Ford dealership today .... hehehe

In case you haven't been keeping up with the new cars, GM (or Bob Lutz) is trying the OZ connection again. This time its the Commodore's turn to come stateside. It will be badged as a Pontiac G8. A 361 HP LS engine powers the GT. It matches well to the current Charger (non-SRT), except in price. It destroys it there. A V-8 G8 comes in at just under $30,000. About $6,000 less than the Hemi.
Bonus is that a rumored SS may make its way here also. With a romping 425 HP and an optional manual.
Now if Ford had done that with the FPV Falcon GT-P instead of killing it off.  >:(

Caddy also showed off a coupe version of the CTS. If it hits production, expect a V spec version to aim directly at the M3. But with a buttload of pushrod V-8 whoop a$$.

And don't tell Bimmer.
The first boatload of M3's and 1 Series have hit the states. But there was a snag. The boat listed badly during the crossing and about 370 cars were damaged in the ensuing chaos. Some will be fixed, most will be crushed. I have seen a pic of a 6 and an M3 with the noses about ripped off. Sad.

Drift's open letter to the Big Three regarding the pony cars.

Its great your all going to cash in on the revival of the retro pony cars. God knows you are losing your shirts on everything else your pushing on us.

But I have a problem with what you have done to my favorite class of cars. These cars are too big. I know your trying to pull in the "Baby Boomer Bucks." Why else would you style them like they were from 1969. But seriously, they are to fat.

I'm no child of the '60's or '70's for that matter. But they have always been the cool cars to be seen in during the high school years. When I was in HS, the 5.0 was a damn cool car. So was the Camaro. The girls loved going out on the highway for a little run through the gears and hearing the V-8 roar.

But you have lost your way regarding these cars. These were affordable cars that a kid fresh out of HS with a good job could afford. Now they are too big, too expensive and just completely useless to a young buck.

Really, the GT Mustang tips the scales at over 3800lbs. The upcoming Challenger regesters at a laughable 4100lbs. I don't have a clue what the Camaro will come out weighing, being its over a year before it comes to market, but its got to be about the same as the Mustang. This is what a Chevelle, Torino or GTO weighed back in the 60's. I know that ABS, airbags, and power everything is expected in a car, but come on. Where is the stripper base V8 that has been missing from the line ups since the mid 90's. How about a base v8 with manual windows, locks, and cloth seats.

Pure heresy you say. There is no profit in that. But I think there would be.

I have no use for these things. I really dont have a need for ABS either, or traction control. I can do these things myself (and rather would).

The back seat has always been a torture chamber for anyone over the age of five for years. And there is no use for a trunk except for a cooler and the spare. Lets cut out about four inches of body and lose about 2-300 lbs. Or better yet how about a hatchback again.

Ideally, I want these cars about 32-3400 lbs. The reduction in weight will increase the soon to be important gas mileage figures that are upcoming. It would also help out on the handling front as well. Its time you looked at why those cars sold large numbers once, and possibly could again. Stop trying to sell overlifted cars and trucks and focus on making a fun, affordable V8 pony car car once again.

The market is here. We're waiting.

Agreed.  Much agreed.

I wonder if this is why import tuners are so popular thesedays; there's no American equivalent anymore.

The base of the import tuners comes from two different changes. One is Detroit's problem. The other is common sense.

The first wave hit because of the hand-me-down cars. The parents moved out of the Accord and Civics that were the daily drivers and gave them to their teenage sons for school. Boys being boys, the juvenille d!&# measuring contest that is racing began. Somebody was faster because of this or that. Some got jobs in the industry and could build/design the parts that they would need to take it to the next level.

Do you remember the build quality of late '80s, early '90 domestics? They were horrible. Ford ended up recalling over a half a mill cars due to head gaskets. All the growing pains of turning almost the entire brand over to FWD. So a smart person got a Honda or Toyota, the resale value was almost double compared to a Taurus or God forbid the Corsica.

Then F&F movie came out and changed what the cool cars were.

The second is that Ford and Chevy simply moved the pricing up on the Mustang and Camaro. Too many baubles and safety considerations drove up the prices. (as well as growing pension and health costs) It used to be you could get a stripped 5.0 (sans A/C too) for less than 10,000 new. If you could haggle good. Now, you can't even look at a GT for less than $25,000.

Once the bodies changed over, the prices went up. Now, it would cost a 19 year old almost $1000 a month in payments and insurance for a Mustang. Even a six. Most of that would be in insurance.

I know when my woman bought her Cobra, she financed $28,000 at 7% for five and out came a nice $530 payment. Good thing she was old enough not to get really hit by the insurance. If I had gotten it, it would have been probably 3-400 dollars more than what she pays for six months.

I knew a guy who got a hardtop Cobra that was about my age just about two months later. He siad he was paying almost $400 a month on insurance. Almost as much as the car payment. That's the other catch.

Another thing is how unfair the insurance is to the weaker cars. When I had my 5.0 on the road (86 GT Conv), I had a friend that had an 88 four conv. His insurance man said that if he had a V8 it would only be $50 more every six months. He felt like a fool. That four couldn't even turn the tires with a neutral drop it was so weak. I could see the V8 paying, but his car was the slowest car in the Ford lineup. Even Tempos were faster than it. He was still paying the Mustang premium.

That's where the change took place.

Yep, I heard about that accident in shipping.  Sad, truly sad.

As far as price goes, it isn't just the domestics that are getting more expensive.  Look at the Evo & STI (STi?  I never can get it right).  When Automobile Magazine can run a comparison between the Evo, STI, and a BMW 335xi, you know the Evo & STI are getting pricey.

Trouble is, it can get tricky to seperate how much is the automakers charging more, and how much is currency changes.
It is highly likely that the above post was produced with a drippy jowl.

Well, the insurance issue is the reason I bought an '04 Chrysler Sebring convertible (6 cyl, 200 hp) instead of the '03 (I think?) Cobra Mustang (8 Cyl, 390 hp I think).

They don't have much look with ships don't BMW. Britains supplies sunk about 5 years ago...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/2576931.stm

The amazing thing was that least 2 ships (including one with a flammable liquid cargo) collided with the wreck before it was removed.

As for you guys complaining at cars being $25,000, here's what you get for a similar price over here:

http://www.channel4.com/4car/gl/gallery/gallery/3539/1

1.3 litres of pure diesel power ;D

I know i'm getting a bit of topic here but.... the cheapest corsa 1.3cdti (75hp "Essentia") I could find over here is actually 27,097.60 USD  :'( To make thing a little bit more recognizable for our american friends : Hummer H3 5.3 V8 = 125,268USD / Audi S5 4.2 V8 = 130,894USD (Prices in the Netherlands)

Time for a few short news nuggets.

GM is going to make a hardtop (sorta) version of the Solstice. Coming in with the same powertrains as the roadsters. 177 HP 2.4 L standard, 260HP 2.0 L turbo for the GXP. The sorta means that all cars will be a targa top. I have seen pictures and it is rather sexy. With a nice bubble back hatch coming down to meet the existing large rear end.

The racing front is a atwitter with news that later this year Rahal-Letterman racing with campaign a new BMW M3 in ALMS. With new CF body work and larger tires under its heavily flared fenders it looks to be a contender. Estimated race weight is a miniscule 2300 lbs behind the reworked V8.

On a side note, I am still waiting for the annoucement that Jay Leno, Mattel, and BMW will team up to run a car in the Speed Touring car series. The resulting Mini Ha Ha race team will dominate the paddock in LPM's.

UK prices are expensive but just be glad you don't live in Denmark... They have to pay a 108% tax on all new cars!!  :o

Rough example of the Ford Focus ST... (give or take £1000)

UK -  £24,000 or $48,000
Denmark - £50,000 OR $100,000

Also with the new Nissan GTR... just between US and UK prices...

US - $50,000
UK - $100,000  >:(

I am very tempted to move to the states just so I can get one for half price compared to over here!!
