I'm no youngster anymore.
« on: June 22, 2010, 06:14:20 PM »
So Friday after work I was in need of some stress relief.  I eye'd up the boss's Yamaha Raptor 660 4-wheeler and thought to myself...."Hmmm, I used to race MX a short blast on a 4 wheeler shouldn't be too tough."  Famous last words!!

Not 60 yards from the shop I came to a grinding halt.  I jumped out of the ditch between the parking lot and the open field behind us and my foot slipped off of the foot peg.  When my shoe hit the ground it stopped but the bike was on its way through 2nd gear so my left Tib/Fib tried everything to stop the 4 wheeler.  I heard the snap but didn't realize it until I felt the dreaded dangling feeling.  I had broken it.

Friday night in the ER wasn't fun. I learned a lot about pain.

Saturday in the hospital awaiting surgery wasn't any better. I learned how ineffective Morphine is, really it didn't last 90 minutes.

Sunday morning 3AM I'm wheeled into the OR.  By 9:30AM I'm up for my 1st physical therapy, 11AM I'm navigating stairs. 9PM they attempt to discharge me.  Had to fight with the doctor to keep me overnight but I was in no shape to travel or walk up my porch stairs at night.  I stayed the night.

Monday morning I get discharged and make it home, finally.

I'll be home for the next two weeks until I can have the staples taken out. I'll have physical therapy at home a couple times a week.  Then I'll be on office duty at work until I'm cleared to turn wrenches again.  Unfortunately I can't slip into my gaming chair and still elevate my foot so Forza time will be limited severely.  No fun, but that's what I get for reliving my youth.

Geese, Fit, that sounds painful. Know the feeling. Rolled my Triumph Spitfire way back when and broke an arm. Ouch.
Keep your chin up, though. Enjoy the drugs, the down time and sorry you won't be in-game for a while. That'll give the rest of us some time to put the chase on you.
Git well soon!
Cheers!

Ouch! Fingers crossed that it's a simple break rather than a compound fracture.

Can't say I've ever broken anything worse than a finger so I can't really claim to know what it feels like. But I can agree that morphine is overrated as I ended up in A&E with kidney stones earlier this year - let's just say that the maximum dose still isn't enough to get rid of that pain so I can imagine it's the same story with a broken leg.

Can't really offer any advice on top of barumba's - just sit back and don't do anything to slow the healing process.

Fingers crossed for a quick recovery - get well soon.

Speaking as one who has busted more than a few bones I can comiserate with the inaffectiveness of Morphine, or almost anything else for that matter, when it comes to bone hurt.  Bone hurt is deep and steady - it can make you cry.

So sorry to hear about your accident.  Take care from here and get well soon, as soon as possible.

Well, if you can't forzicate on your machine, you can forzicate on your PC - let me know if I have any Excel templates you can use, and don't hesitate at all about asking for assistance with them.

Hang in there Pard...

Thanks guys, I've been putzing around a little on the PC and have been scheming a way to get my 360 in range of the caontroller.  IIRC there is a "wireless" remote in the basement.  Just need to plead with the wife to go and find it for me.  For pain, ice is the best thing for me.  It keeps swelling down and that is a huge step in the right direction.  I've cleaned up my existing spread sheets to the best of my ability but will likely come across something or start a project to consolidate information if I feel up to it.

At least I have Fuel TV and Speed to keep me occupied as well as some old Aussie V8 races on the DVR.  Oh, well time for physical therapy, better pay attention to the doc for a bit.

I was able to get the wireless up for a round of Forza play but it couldn't hold my attention as the pain meds beckoned me to sleep.  I made a few passes around La Sarthe in pursuit of FIL completion but after 3 cars and 9 laps I was spent.  When the pain subsides I'll have another shot at it.  So much for taking advantage of time off work but I never expected it to be a vacation.

Off to the doctors on Wednesday and I hope to have a more comfortable cast or splint when I leave the checkup. Trying to ween off of the pain meds, or at least stretch out the dosing times, to see how much I really need them.  Ugh! Can't wait for things to go back to normal.

Splint is off, the staples are out, and the swelling is way down. I've been hobbling around the house for the past few days and my physical therapist has stopped by to show me exercises to help free up my ankle.  It was in a fixed position for 10 days and it doesn't like to move all that much.  Lots of stretching to do, lots of stretching.

Good news:
I'm sleeping through the night now!! (Huge help)
I'm able to go nearly 6 hours without meds. (I don't want to get hooked so the sooner they go the better)
I went for a cruise around the house yesterday on my crutches with just my support boot on.

Things are looking up but still no Forza time. Family will be in town for the 4th and that won't leave me much TV time so it will still be something for me to get back to at some point.  Thanks for all the well wishes, things are progressing.

Blooze, back to the old Round Tuit Avatar? I rather liked the look of the Old Fart Avatar. chuckles.

Remember when I commented on the ...tuit, a few years ago?

So as far as reporting it, you can probably consider it reported.

And the best way to have others think that you are not exploiting it as a glitch is to...

Quit doing it.
and Quit talking about it.

Talked the wife into bringing a dining room chair into the living room so I could get some play time in.  Managed to play for a few hours before I started to feel the burn and called it a night.  The stress relief was worth the effort on the wifes part and it was good to be behind the wheel of a virtual car since I'm still not clear to drive my actual car.  Even when I do dumb things like break my leg she still lets me have play time.
