E275 1971 Skyline...suggestions?
« on: January 11, 2010, 06:39:05 PM »
Ok so...I've never really been one to tune my cars. Going all the way back to the Gran Turismo 2 days I was the guy that bought every part I could afford and ran with whatever that end result was. Even through FM2 (I wanted to tune but could not find the time to). Towards the end of FM2 I would get numbers from a calc, say hey that's good enough and just left it at that. I've read stuff from Blooze and Fit4aKing since I can remember and was always interested in it. I just never put it into practice...until now. With a little inspiration from Fit's posts on F and E classes I decided I wanted to build and tune one of my favorite cars for E. The '71 Skyline.

I have what I think is a pretty good build for me. I haven't tuned it much because it handle's pretty well stock. The only change of really made so far is the FD from 3.30 to 4.66. Gearing is where I'm the worst. I'm not the best driver by any means and I'd like to think that in the hands of someone that can actually drive it wouldn't be half bad lol. I have a ton of grip but I've been thinking that maybe I have too much. I've been second guessing my build and thinking that maybe with a little less grip I can get a little more go out of it and still keep it under control.

The build:

Sport Intake
Sport Exhaust

Race Brakes
Race Springs
Race ARB's
Full Roll Cage
Race Weight Reduction

Race Clutch
Race Transmission
Race Driveline
Race Differential

Street Tires
Holeshot Holestar Wheels

Race Rear Wing

AWD Coversion

I started with the AWD conversion for two reasons. Because I haven't played a racing game in a while I figured I'd use the AWD to re-wet my feet so to speak. And also to lower the PI. The wing is also only there to lower the PI as I don't believe I actually need it. I don't have anything against the stock RWD, I just haven't tried it yet.

My question is: is there a better build out there if I'm going for an all-around car? I'm open to any and all suggestions. I think that if I can get my building process down with this car it will help me in the higher classes.

Looking over the build I noticed a few things that I probably wouldn't have done in an E-class car.

-Street tires is the first thing I would scrap.  I still don't have any F or E class cars that are running other than stock tires. (I think) I would definitely lose the compound in favor of wider tires before I added anything tire related.

-Second is the race brakes.  Unless you have a heavy car you rarely need race brakes in the lower classes.  To be honest the cars probably won't be going that fast to begin with.  It may only seem like a small PI gain to lose them but if you can make it up where the car actually needs it then you'll be better off.

-Lastly is the wing.  If you don't need it, don't use it.  It will only slow down an already mild car and you'll need the miles per hour on the track!

I'm currently working on a build up project in my garage so feel free to follow along with that.  It may shed some light on my build process and if nothing else may spark some discussion on how other people do things.  My only words of advise is to not build blind.  If you don't drive the car stock you won't know its strengths and weakness's.  Since you went with the AWD swap I'd drive it AWD and nothing else and be mindful of what the car is good and bad at.  Then you can either build to improve the deficincies or to increase its strengths.  Hope this helps.
Go sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here.

As above,....but i'll reiterate.
Stock tires are fine in this class, but i'd probably make sure the tire widths were at least 185 or so.

AWD - don't need it. In this class, there is barely enough power to really stress the traction to much anyway. Efficiency of operation is the key here, and being smooth and controlled with your driving inputs is just as critical as in any class.

If you're smooth then you won't need race brakes.

An AWD doesn't need a rear wing either, not without a front. Your just killing top speed and robbing power with aero in this class.

For me, a low classed car needs to be efficient. FWD or RWD, no aero(maybe skirts), lightweight, only stock or street upgrades, minimal~moderate grip, maximum hp.

I haven't got this car yet, but would back up what FD and Fit have said, with one exception. Personally, I would prefer to keep the car RWD but that's more of a purist thing. I know from adding the AWD swap to the Mk II Golf that it can give certain cars a massive PI drop for not a lot of performance loss. So, from a purely performance aspect it probably is the right thing to do. However, I feel it is preferable to drive the car you want not necessarily what is fastest just because T10 have cocked up the AWD PI on some/all cars. So stick with AWD if you want to drive it AWD.

Other than that, the rest of the advice holds. I don't know if there is a spoiler other than the Forza one for this car, but in the lower classes I've tended to add one of the others if it's available because the lower two classes tend to get near to their top speed. And most of the non-Forza wings can give you that extra couple of mph which can come in handy in an online race.

Thanks everyone! I drove the car stock last night both RWD and AWD and I was actually faster RWD. The AWD is much easier to handle but for me it was about a whole second slower overall. Unfortunately my xbox hard drive crashed so I'll have to put this project of mine on hold while i replay through career mode.
