Mirror Image
« on: January 17, 2010, 05:55:10 PM »
After one puts together a series of decals and attaches them to build a shape, how do you mirror image it. This question for both left side to right side (I think the paint shop offers that, but haven't got that far yet), and more importantly, on the hood/top, from driver side to passenger side?
Example:
I joined together a bar and curve (the curve is not symmetrical so can't be spun). I skewed the curve to get a wide to narrow sickle affect. Now, I want to copy the combination to the other side of the hood, but it needs to flip so the curve part goes in the other direction. Any tips are appreciated.
Thanks.
See below for what I am trying to copy, note the blue shape on the hood...

If you’re gonna be singer then you better be rock star
If you’re gonna be a driver then you better drive a race car

Have you tried putting the design on the side and copying it to the other side, then copying from the new copy and place it on the hood?

I think that should work.

Hmm, no. But I'll give it a try. Sounds like a good work around.
Thanks O2.
Cheers!

Open's suggestion can be a pretty easy work around.

What I tend to do a lot is make the X value negative.  Ex. the curve has a size of y=6 and x=9 changing the x to x= -9 will create a mirror of the image as long as you leave the Y value the same.  Then the final piece is to move the piece to the correct coordinates on the hood/trunk/roof etc.   YMMV some of the vinyls are kind of weird and don't really work right.

Hope that helps.  ???

Thanks, RW. I'll give that a shot tonight.

Renos method will work, but most of the assymetrical vinyls don't adhere to that rule when they've been spun, stretched and skewed.  My suggestion would be second option to Reno's, in 9 out of 10 instances.

Depending on the number of layers, copying from one side to the other to invert the image should save a fair bit of time.

It is  a pretty archaic method and one I usually only use when I've started the design on the hood first.   The paint shop is a HUGE!! step up from FM2 and I'm still figuring out some workflow tricks, but there are still niggling little things that bug me.

Like how about a mirror function from the left to right side of the car, then you wouldn't have to hand place all those pretty custom logos when you duplicate from one side to the other.

Or what about the ability to skew or manipulate the transparency of a group, that would be very convenient.

Agreed, just last night I found myself wishing yet again that there was a way to independantly manipulate x and y sizes for a group.

I wish they could just give us photoshop in the editor! :D

RW's method worked great. The one rhombus I was trying to swing mirror image worked OK. Started out and pulled, spun, skewed and stretched it in the "fairest of them all" view. Then copied, did the + to - mirror image conversion. It worked OK. But, when I tried to copy a combination of several decals that I had linked to form a shape, it did not work as I had hoped. Hmmmm.
Perhaps Turn 10 could offer a DL upgrade to include a mirror image feature for the paint shop. It would make things so much faster and easier.

Well, its only been 5 months, but I finally "finished" this project. She's not perfect, but, well, what do you think? A couple of views.

Looks pretty close to me too. Way better than anything I've even tried recently.

You could fatten up the "Philips" on the side with this simple tip. Shrink the text a little bit so the height and width are slightly smaller than you want (do each letter at a time so you keep the position and move to the top left of where you want each letter located). Then highlight the word Philips. Stamp, and move the new Philips right 2 points. Repeat moving down 2 points then again moving left 2 points.

You can also add the drop shading to the "vodafone" on the windscreen banner in a similar manner by locating the shadow in black first, then stamping, changing the colour to white and moving up and left a couple of points to get the main text.

Thanks, Spiny, I'll give that Philips tip a try. As for the vodafone drop shadow, there is one there, but due to the small size of the pic it is not easy to make out. I'll increase the offset of the grey letters behind the white to make it more visible. I also have to add the Audi Sport log along the roof at the top of the front doors. Details, details. ;)

I made a few adjustments, added "ambi light" logo to blue pin stripes on hood, added Audi Sport decal to roof line. Fixed the fonts in the vodafone window header, the a and f (sort of, had to use a "q" for the "a" and add a few blocks here and there to make the shape). I repositioned the ambi light logo on the hood, fixed the two rings so they did not overprint the "m" , fixed a blue racing stripe on the rear deck. Anyone who downloaded the livery from my storefront before 4:00 PM EST today, June 17, let me know. I will gift the revised version right away. Thanks, and Cheers!
