GT400 24 Hours of Daytona
« on: April 06, 2009, 06:07:43 PM »
Quick question, guys: Next Sunday is Easter.  Any thoughts on postponing a week to allow for time with family/friends?

I'm staying at home rather than going back to family too. In fact, it probably suits me better this weekend than the one after :o

That said, as I'm not in the running for the championship, I think it's really for yourself, Pete, open and Bimmer to decide.

Works for me.  I'll run whenever we're scheduled.

I've even managed to get some testing in on this one :o

Some of you may remember we ran this track before the season started while many of us were still trying to get a tune ready for Sebring. And, if you were in the same race as me, you might remember that I was slower with mid-range d/f settings than with full downforce ??? However, in view of the way than fndr and Pete both ate me alive on the straights at Silverstonr I figured it might be worth me seeing just how much time I was losing by going to minimum downforce. Oddly enough, the car was almost as fast around the track with minimum d/f as it was with full d/f, and both configurations were slower than the mid-range set-up. How does that work? I can only guess that it's a quirk of the Forza model.

That leaves me with a dilemma though. Do I go with high downforce for more consistency? Or low downforce so that you don't all steam past on the straight? Decisions, decisions...

The problem here is that you can't get it back at the end of the straight like at Silverstone.

Well, if there are no objections, we'll wait a week on the finale of the GT400.

If anyone wants to run a test session for a series idea, then this would be the ideal weekend for it.

I was testing out a potential GT400, nigh 400 horse TVR Tuscan S in A Class on Motegi a couple of nights ago when V12 Iridium showed up. He lost the first race, then built a car in less than 5 minutes, rejoined the room and kicked my butt up and down the entire track.

Kinda stings when someone whips you, in your own car, -THAT THEY'RE DRIVING FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!

Nice one, kid!  ;)

This has actually come to work out well for me.  After (FINALLY) starting to get on top of this flu-like thing, I find myself buried under 4 days of make-up work, with the 360 being verboten until said work if completed.  So not having to worry about a race this week actually works out nicely.

Which track is "Daytona" on?

Even if there's no room for exhibition or if the logistics crap out, I'd like to be able to say that I beat bimmer's lap times... ;)

Tuscan S should be pretty quick at Sunset.. Not sure how well it would have run some of the other tracks though, you can't fit slicks can you?

I ran some testing the other day, i'm hitting over 160mph down the main straight but was struggling with some high speed understeer, once I got that sorted out I was into the 1:29's, It wasn't the cleanest of tests though, I think the outcome of this race though will be down to who keeps it out of the walls...  :-\

Yeah, especially the ones that bookend the oval.  I ruined my Clio Cup race at Sunset with that very wall.....

That makes me feel a bit better. I was expecting to get stomped down that straight but it seems things might not be as bad as I feared if I go for the low d/f set-up. And seeing as I managed to tame the oversteer with a bit of judicious tuning that's the way I think I'll be going (best lap so far is a 1:28.7xx, but I doubt I'll get that in race conditions seeing as how that was on minimal fuel...)

As for the Tuscan S, I've got one built up already which meets the GT400 specs. It is very quick in a straight line and will do well here, but mine is sitting on stock tyres. Even with no weight reduction, I don't think you can get slicks on it in A Class.
