GT400: Pirelli 100 at Mugello
« on: March 07, 2009, 09:40:07 AM »
How are times looking thus far?  I ran a 122.2xx in tuning, and 123 flat (or a little under) seems to be a realistic goal for every lap.  I know Snyder mentioned a 120.xx, but feels he's likely to run high 121's in space because of racepro.  Frankly, if I can get within a half second of Snyder's laps, I'll be more than happy.  Just gotta out-qualify Pete, so I can run off and leave HIM instead of the other way around.  hehe

Wow, you guys are 30-some seconds faster than I am... You sure you're running Mugello?

Yes, but I'm equally sure I mistranslated into straight seconds.  113 flat and 111.xxx make the above sound much more believable, no?   :D

I ran some testing last night, found out my fuel will last up till lap 17, so I can pit at lap 8 if I had to in order to get a clear field.

Was funny, first lap was a 1:59.9, second a 2:05.xxx then 1:53.4xx, after about 3 more laps I ran a 1:51 then On lap 8 or so I ran my first sub 1:50.

Fastest lap was a 1:50.510, with green time all over, so I could see a miracle lap of a 1:49.xxx perhaps in the race.  I was running consistent 1:50's up until lap 15 when the tires started to get a little yellow.

Also question.  The US has daylights savings time, don't know if the world changes ahead an hour like us, or not.  So does the race start at 3:00 for us, or 4:00 pm for the US?

It'll start at 3 Eastern.  If anyone has a way to get in touch with Pete/Spiny and make sure they know, though, that would be a good idea.  IIRC, Britain changes either a week before or a week after us, but they do indeed observe Daylight Saving Time.  This was a discussion during the Clio Cup as well.

We'll be going forward an hour last weekend in march, so looks like we're out of synch for a few weeks. I think that makes is 7pm here, which suits me better so if the race gets off on time I could make it whether I'm going out tonight or not :)

If things are running a bit late, I may end up dropping out towards the end, but I think the timing will be ok so long as we're started qualy by 7:15

Pre-game Show

Intro:  They've been through the United States.  We saw a close contest at Sebring...more drama next week at Laguna...then the field began to sort at Maple and Road Atlanta.  Now, with the American leg of the GT400 world tour behind them, our teams move to Europe.  Stay tuned for the Pirelli 100 from Mugello, next on Speed!

CF:  Welcome to our coverage of the Pirelli 100.  Big race today, Dorsey.

DS:  Indeed, Calvin.  Second, third, and fourth, are separated by just a few points, and we're at one of the most balanced tracks on the circuit.

CF:  True.  And now, because of the time change, we're much closer to the race than usual, so we'll catch you after these words from our sponsors.

CF:  And we're back.  You know, Dorsey, it seemed like the drivers really drove their own respective races today.

DS:  That's right, Calvin, but mostly because they didn't really share space very often.  Surprisingly, there were no cautions today.

CF:  True, but also not a lot of racing.  The field sorted pretty quickly, and aside from a little battling for position early on, the race was pretty uneventful.

DS:  Well, yeah, but the repair bills are more reasonable that way.

CF:  True enough.  We'll be back in a minute, hopefully with some words with the winner.

(In the mean time, enjoy this picture of the pace car, the Scuderia upgraded to U class and 900 + hp.  It's actually surprisingly easy to drive.)

Edit:  Standings were updated.  No positions changed hands, but it's getting interesting.  A lot will be decided next week at the Ring.

With only 10 points covering the top 3 I think this championships gonna go right down to the wire.... I'm hoping for good results at the Ring and Daytona but Siverstone and Suzuka may prove more challanging... But hopefully i'll be a bit more competative than I was last night  ::)

At least I got a new PB to get me inside the top 10,000 times... so there's my positive from the evening... lol

Extra smokey.... now with no assists!

CF: We've managed to land an interview with Brian, crew chief of Spiny Anteater who drove the hitherto problematic to a surprising 2nd place in today's race. Our Brian takes up the action...

BT: Brian, we've not seen much of the Miura yet, what went right today.

Brian: Well Brian, we've struggled to make the races this season. The first two were lost due to sponsorship commitments, at Maple Valley we suffered some early damage and had a flawed strategy which didn't help us, and at Road Atlanta we suffered a massive electrical failure just before the race which put us out of the contest. I guess that just making the grid was a step in the right direction, so to get second place was massive for us.

BT: The Miura looked quick today, can you explain how?

Brian: Our car is very good on the brakes and on turn in, but lacks the ultimate grip of some of the really well-handling cars such as Snyder's and Open's. If i had to say, I would say that the field today had those two grippy cars, two power cars run by Pete and Bimmer which really struggled, and two compromise cars in the form of ours and the Tiny Terror car. I was really surprised that we were faster than Open, especially as he had a better top end on the straight - the only thing I can thing of as to our speed is that our excellent turn-in meant we could carry more speed in the corners than might otherwise be the case. It has to be said though that we had no answer to Snyder.

BT: You had a bit of an incident in the pits - can you elaborate on what caused that?

Brian: Yes.

BT: And...?

Brian: Our idiot driver managed to hit the pit wall coming into the pits. Fortunately, the large bang wasn't symptomatic of any serious damage - in fact apart from the car jumping out of 2nd gear at the time of the impact and Spiny having to select first we didn't suffer any damage at all which is a miracle really. The track officials here at Mugello seem to have really perfected the art of energy absorption.

BT: So apart from that, a pretty quiet easy run then?

Brian: Almost, but our entire computer system crashed on lap 22 and we were unable to track the progress of the other cars. Fortunately, we were able to soldier on to the end and maintain that 2nd place despite not knowing what sort of times the other guys were setting [Thanks guys :)]. Other than that though, the Miura performed almost faultlessly. Just a shame about the driver.

BT: Will we be seeing you at the 'Ring?

Brian: I hope so. We're not in a position to confirm just yet, but at the moment indications are positive.

BT: There we go then, Monotremely Slow Racing are very pleased with that 2nd place, and hope to put in a good show at the fearsome Nuerburgring. And now, back to the studio...

BT:  We're here with a late interview with the winner of the race, Snyder, driver for V12 Team.  Can you tell us about your race experience today?

Snyder: Well today was finally our day to shine.  After the mess up at Maple Valley that cost us the race, to the damage at Road Atlanta that played a role in the 2nd place their, it's nice to take the checkered finally.  Plus I was getting worried that I'd only win qualifying!  I was determined to win Mugello, and it showed with a blazing 1:49.933, which just is beyond what I thought would be my fastest lap.

CT:  What are your plans for the 'Ring next week?

Snyder:  Well for Nurburgring we're just going to try and stay out of trouble and try for 3rd or 4th, because our car is way down on power, only hitting 148 down the front straight.

BT:  Thank you for your time and the interview.  See everyone next week!
